3 things that piss me off

1- the anti-gay marriage group. you have the right to not like homos, you have the right to say I dont think there should be gay marriage BUT YOU DONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DENY HOMOS THEIR RIGHTS. THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND PROPERTY. SAME AS ANYONE ELSE. It's fine to oppose gay marriage but not fine to vote against it.2- people who switch lanes WHEN THERE ARE SOLID LINES WHICH MEANS DON'T SWITCH LANES! (like in construction zones)3- people who say nevermind EXCUSE ME BUT IF YOU DIDNT FRIGGIN MUMBLE ALL THE TIME MAYBE I WOULDNT HAVE TO KEEP ASKING!

Today

I woke up today and there was still school. I didn't care. It sets up for future snow days. I didn't want today to be a snow day anyways, not a Friday. Snow days have to be like... Wednesdays. I remember in Calculus, the class established Wednesday was the worst day of the entire week.Anyways.The roads weren't that bad. So I went into Pottery, finished a couple things in that class, then headed off to a meeting with the superintendent. She wanted to talk to me about my newspaper article that I wrote for NGN - SEN re: the budget crisis. (If you want to see it, leave a comment and I'll mail it to you). She wanted to correct an error in my writing, tell me some other stuff ... she basically wants me to help raise awareness so I'll be writing another article about it. Then she was like sooooooo hows the weather and I was like haha not too bad, the snow is not really hard and its just kinda like falling down. .. and I said my brother (10th gr) was mad we had school! And she was like well being mad is different than dissapointed! And she said she had called several ppl and they all said school was fine (superintendents dont just wake up and go ooooo i think ill have school ... they call other superintendents, the principals, the police chief, etc) and they said the roads were safe...it was a good meeting I like herWalking out I overheard the secretary askin the bus co. if they could come early ... then I left the building (Sup's office is @ the JHS across fromt the SHS) I was like woa the snow was a lot more hard and it was falling harder .. I was like yeah we're having early D and we did at 12 30. I'm glad, I wanted a full day to get in ... if I am gonna wake up at 6 30, I'm going to school dammit. So now we dont have to make it up, and it was a nothing day cuz of the weather so its all good.Lit of the Fan was just eh...sat there did nothing...in Dyna Dem I talked about what I talked about with Dr Reynolds (superintendent) and we had a discussion abt the budget crisis.came home, chilled on the net, ate hot fudge (my moms hot fudge ...omg ... thank god I finally got rid of it all, its like candy) ummm ... watch a movie ... Still Shining I think it was called, makde in like 92 .. michael douglas. I liked it, I liked the songs and the way they showed the movie ... good directing and they didnt use sharp color, some graininess, which really made it look good ... ummmm wow that american cinema class is making me notice all these things...hm.ANYWAYS...work tomorrow...baseball sunday...mapping i think is monday...then ill work out again tuesday wednesday thursday (canceled my offday) friday and saturday then baseball then Feb. vaca...Baseball "tryouts" are close and I still dont know if Im goin back.

Another step towards becoming an actual democracy

The Massachusetts high court ruled Wednesday that only full, equal marriage rights for gay couples - rather than civil unions - are constitutional, clearing the way for the nation's first same-sex marriages in the state as early as May."The history of our nation has demonstrated that separate is seldom, if ever, equal," the four justices who ruled in favor of gay marriage wrote in the advisory opinion requested by the state Senate. After seven gay couples sued in 2001, the Supreme Judicial Court ruled in November that gay couples have a constitutional right to marry. In its 4-3 ruling, the seven-member court gave the Legislature six months to change state laws to make it happen. But the vague wording of the ruling left lawmakers - and advocates on both sides - uncertain if Vermont-style civil unions would satisfy the court's decision. The Massachusetts court said any civil unions bill that falls short of marriage would establish an "unconstitutional, inferior, and discriminatory status for same-sex couples."The state Senate asked for more guidance from the court, whose advisory opinion was made public Wednesday morning when it was read into the Senate record. The much-anticipated opinion sets the stage for next Wednesday's constitutional convention, where the Legislature will consider an amendment that would legally define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Without the opinion, Senate President Robert Travaglini had said the vote would be delayed. The soonest a constitutional amendment could end up on the ballot would be 2006, meaning that until then the high court's decision will be Massachusetts law no matter what is decided at the constitutional convention."We've heard from the court, but not from the people," Gov. Mitt Romney said in a statement. "The people of Massachusetts should not be excluded from a decision as fundamental to our society as the definition of marriage."Travaglini said he wanted time to talk with fellow senators before deciding what to do next."I want to have everyone stay in an objective and calm state as we plan and define what's the appropriate way to proceed," Travaglini said.Conservative leaders said they were not surprised by the advisory opinion, and vowed to redouble their efforts to pass the constitutional amendment.Mary Bonauto, an attorney who represented the seven couples who filed the lawsuit, said she anticipated a fierce battle, saying that "no matter what you think about the court's decision, it's always wrong to change the constitution to write discrimination into it."When it was issued in November, the 4-3 ruling set off a firestorm of protest across the country among politicians, religious leaders and others opposed to providing landmark rights for gay couples to marry.President Bush immediately denounced the decision and vowed to pursue legislation to protect the traditional definition of marriage. Church leaders in the heavily Roman Catholic state also pressed their parishioners to oppose efforts to allow gays to marry. And legislators were prepared to vote on a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would seek to make the court's ruling moot by defining as marriage as a union between one man and one woman - thus expressly making same-sex marriages illegal in Massachusetts. What the case represented, both sides agree, was a significant new milestone in a year that has seen broad new recognitions of gay rights in America, Canada and abroad, including a June U.S. Supreme Court decision striking a Texas ban on gay sex.Legal experts, however, said that the long-awaited decision, while clearly stating that it is unconstitutional to bar gay couples from marriage, gave ambiguous instructions to the state Legislature.Lawmakers remained uncertain if civil unions went far enough to live up to the court's ruling - or if actual marriages were required. When a similar decision was issued in Vermont in 1999, the court told the Legislature that it could allow gay couples to marry or create a parallel institution that conveys all the state rights and benefits of marriage. The Legislature chose the second route, leading to the approval of civil unions in that state. The Massachusetts decision made no mention of an alternative solution, but instead pointed to a recent decision in Ontario, Canada, that changed the common law definition of marriage to include same-sex couples and led to the issuance of marriage licenses there. The state "has failed to identify any constitutionally adequate reason for denying civil marriage to same-sex couples," the court wrote. "Barred access to the protections, benefits and obligations of civil marriage, a person who enters into an intimate, exclusive union with another of the same sex is arbitrarily deprived of membership in one of our community's most rewarding and cherished institutions."The Massachusetts case began in 2001, when the seven gay couples went to their city and town halls to obtain marriage licenses. All were denied, leading them to sue the state Department of Public Health, which administers the state's marriage laws.A Suffolk Superior Court judge threw out the case in 2002, ruling that nothing in state law gives gay couples the right to marry. The couples immediately appealed to the Supreme Judicial Court, which heard arguments in March. The plaintiffs argued that barring them from marrying a partner of the same sex denied them access to an intrinsic human experience and violated basic constitutional rights.Over the past decade, Massachusetts' high court has expanded the legal parameters of family, ruling that same-sex couples can adopt children and devising child visitation right for a former partner of a lesbian.Massachusetts has one of the highest concentrations of gay households in the country with at 1.3 percent of the total number of coupled households, according to the 2000 census. In California, 1.4 percent of the coupled households are occupied by same-sex partners. Vermont and New York also registered at 1.3 percent, while in Washington, D.C., the rate is 5.1 percent

What the FUCK

Caption Cutback is"Major Setback"By Leonard HallDeaf people across the country received bad news from the federal government on captioning of popular television shows.National Association of the Deaf (NAD) delivered the bad news by a press release stating that the U.S. Department of Education has declared more than 200 popular television programs inappropriate for captioning. The department claimed the shows don't fit the required definition of "educational, news or informational" programming- - Contributed by Leonard Hall - -- - From The Olathe News - -Under this new declaration, the new guidelines mean the Department can no longer caption those programs. This ruling meant that it will be up to the television companies or studios to provide captioning for new programs. Some new television shows will likely continue to be captioned. Shows declared inappropriate for captioning include:· Classic sitcoms such as Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.· Contemporary sitcoms such as Malcolm in the Middle and The Simpsons.· Dramas such as Law & Order.· Children's cartoons such Dexter's Laboratory, Pokemon and Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.·Many college and professional sports programming, including basketball, baseball, auto racing, tennis, football and golf tournaments. With captioning, it was great to watch football games and keep track of the information being provided to everyone. The announcers keep the viewers interested in the event with all kinds of facts and information. By next fall, there may be little captioning in most sport events. It will be devastating to most deaf football fans, including myself, to having no more captioning on football games. Hearing people should try watching a football game for a whole game without the sound on. It will drive most loyal fans crazy as they need to hear and know everything about what is going on in the game. Try to apply this lack of sound to other popular television programs. A lot of people will get angry. The choice of television programs and shows with captioning may be limited. Deaf advocates are saying that the Department's new policy on captioning will move deaf and hard of hearing people back into second-class citizenry and deny them full access to the world of information. NAD called the move "censorship," saying it isolates children and teens who are deaf or have hearing impairments and prevents them "from watching shows that help them learn about the trends, culture and society around them."Lack of captioning also prevents parents who are deaf from screening programs for their children, NAD said. For a complete list of affected programs, visit www.nad.org.nad.org It was easy to forget our access to captioned programs on television that began 30 years ago on December 3, 1973, when the first captioned ABC News was aired that night. The Department of Education announcement is a major setback to the deaf people by not ensuring them full access to television programs.-----Guess who came up with the idea? Yep. Bush. Y'know...to save money and all that.read more at nad.org under the advocacy tab.

What I did Today

Panel: Evan Brunell, Jamsine RodriquezModerator: John AndersonNotetaker: Camilla Hampton (Don't check my spelling :)Transliterators: Claire Troiano, Laura KetchakeuJamsine and Evan began by giving a little info. about themselves.Clarke kids introduced themselvesAll seniors were in attendanceJamsine: Yeah, you better have questions for me :)What is the biggest change you've experience?E: Rough b/c I was the only deaf student. Trouble "orienting" myself.J: Agreed. Much bigger (population) Making new friends, listen hard and lipread harder. It takes time, but gets easier.John: What was it like to friends?E: People didn't know how to deal with me. They said hello, but didn't know how to carry on a long conversation with me. When I wasat Clarke everyone was my close friends. That's not true in public school. You have a few close friends.J: I was looking forward to making new friends. You ask Q's, you decide to be silly (ways to relate to others and to get attention). They asked me a lot of Q's and I was able to tell them this is what it is. I made a couple of friends and I am making more friends now. It's not easy, but it gets better.J: I din't want to use the FM. I was too embarrassed. I didn't want anyone to know wbout my hearing impairment. I realized that Ineeded an FM to help me and I didn't care what others think. I started answering questions about it. The teacher was helpful. Shewould tell the kids about it. I was a littel embarrassed for a few months, but I got over it. The kids were reeally interested in themicrophone. "You heard that?" they would say.E: I didn't like the FM for the same reason Jasmine didn't like it at first. I have been using a transliterator all through school. It has beenhelpful. When I came to school, I didn't know anyone. I made friends with my OT and she became someone I could rely on. She tellsme what's on the announcements, if the phone rings, if the teacher is whispering to another teacher... she tells me.Deb Bak: What about w/ jokes? Did it help?E: When the kids told jokes, everyone wouyld be laughing, but I didn't get it. She didn't try to clean it up. A swear word... she gave it tome straight.Hannah: Whe you has the OT, how did your classmates react?E: This was a special circumstance. Everyone knew my OT already. They knew who she was (her purpose).Claire Blanchford: Did anyone ever make fun of you?E: In my entire public school career, it happened only once, and I didn't even hear it. In health class, he imitated how I talked. Myteacher heard, not me. She flipped out. He had to go to the Principal's and got a detention and had to write a letter of apology.J: My friends joke around about how I hear, and I do, too. We joke around about pronouncing words. I laugh when I don't say it right. My boyfriend right now apologized for talking badly about my hearing impairment.John w/ student question: What if you don't like a teacher or if the teacher doesn't like you?E: It wasn' hard. They loved me. They would say, "I am going to miss you. You made my life better. You made the class better. " I didhave one teacher who didn't like me, but she didn't let it show.J: The teachers love to know about you and ask questiosn about you. I have fun with them. It's like Clarke School. That's what it's like atNHHS.E: The teachers like to make fun. He said, "Oh, you're here again!" (jokingly).Hannah: Did you meet your teachers on the first day of school, or a couple of days before school started?E: The OT informed the teachers and introduced me to them.J: I had to go a day before to find out where my classroom was and my locker. My sister and my brother went there (NHHS) and theyrecognized me and knew who I was.Claire Blachford: Do the teachers sometimes forget who you are in class?E: I never noticed b/c the OT was there. It didn't matter. There were a couple of times where they would come between my OT and meand just stand there, but would apologize. They always try to walk around. When my OT wasn't there, my teachers would bend overbackwards and change lessons for me. That was helpful.Hannah: Would you get a replacement (OT)?E: I had one up through 9th grade. before I would freak out when she wasn't there, but now, if she can't go, i say, "No problem. I'll befine!"J: They don't forget because they have to wear the microphone. They feel really good about it...like they are a popstar. When they seethe microphone, they know that I am there.J: My tutor, Mrs. Shorter is the one person who gives me advice. She is the person I trust. She makes me feel really comfortable. Sheencouraged me to get the FM. She helped me a lot. I think if she wasn't there, it would have probably taken me a long time to getthrough this (adjustment to high school).John: What do you do if the class is really hard?J: I have a 1:1 tutor to help me with my homework. She would help me go through the textbook.E: I have only hard that problem in math. I had a tutor for that. I had one in 9th grade and 10th grade. English has never been hard.Science and HIstory weren't hard enough for me to get a tutor. I stopped tutoring in 11th grade and my grades have been fine.Claire Blatchford: Can you talk to us about "the wrong crowd?"E: I went from Clarke where everyone were hard workers and they dressed like you guys. As I got older, people started changingmore. Guys would were makeup, etc. One of my former friends had flipped his car with people in it. They were smoking weed. That'sthe wrong crowd. And if you don't like it, don't join it!J: There a lot of different people in high school. I am friends with everybody. But I don't always join them in things like smoking weedand drinking. For me to be there friend is like me being there for them. I am not popular and I am not a nerd. And I am really proud ofmyself for who I am. I don't want to be a bad person who fails (my classes) and partied too much. I am proud of myself for not doing iteven though I am surrounded by people who do.E: I thought my life would be different. I thought, "Here is my one chance to be someone different!" But you can't. You are who you are.J: Some of my friends aren't happy with who they are and started taking their hearing aids off. I tell them to keep wearing your hearingaids. You may turn out to be a great person who other people will be interested in.John: One of the things that have impressed me is that the kids are very comfortable with their hearing loss, but all of them will go outnext year and have to go to a new school. What did you do to advocate for yourself?E: Once a year, Ms. Bak and I would go out and tell people about the T-T-Y and to help educate them. I still have meetings about (me).people have questions about the cochlear implant because I just got it.Deb Bak: Can I tell a story (about Evan)?(At the beginning of) his 8th grade year, I prepared an outline with some things I thought we should tell the kids. Evan said, no, I thinkwe should talk about this, this and this! He really has been an advocate since then.(Deb introduced, "student orientations" as a way to provide Evan's peers about hearing loss.)E: I used to think, "I just want to be hearing!" I thought it would be simpler. We (deaf kids) have been given an important responsibilityto educate others in my path som that everyone who I come in catact with will know. Where would deaf people be without me? Whatwill other deaf people have to do?J: I had a group of friends who asked me, "Can I look at your hearing aid?" "Do you know sign language?" And they didn't know aboutthe T-T-Y. and I said, "Give me your number and I will call you and you can talk with the operator." They love that! They think it's cool!Deb Bak: What is the easiest way for you to keep in touch with your friends, etc.?E: Doesn't like the T-T-Y. I do use the Internet. I use IM (Instant Messaging). You don't feel limited (like the T-T-Y). I was in a chat roomtalking about baseball and I forgot to tell them I was deaf. It wasn't until at a year later that I told them I was deaf.J: I use the phone, but I talk loudly. My Mom can hear my conversations, so I ask her to go upstairs so she can't hear me. I do tell myfriends when they are talking to fast.John: Final thoughts?Claire Troiano: What are your plans after high school? How are you getting ready for college?E: I am sending out applications and scholarship applications for money. The only thing different was in my essay. I made a point totalk about my deafness.E (continued) I thought it had to have Sports Journalism as a major. I also was looking for a school with other deaf students. It doesn'thave to have 11, 000 deaf students like RTID. It could have 10. Then I though... location. I wanted to stay on the East Coast or Hawaii. This brings me to my final criteria... (described coop. and working in the field of Sports Journalism at Boston University).E: If they have questions, they can email agentbrunell@mailforce.netJasmineR. Doesn't have an email address. Thanks to everyone, especially Jasmine Rodriquez and Evan Brunell!Camilla and the Mainstream Crew

Ah yes...

Finals...*deep inhalation of breath*I love finals. I love it so much, I'm forcing you to read this story I wrote...2 years ago. Bwah ha ha ha. (Note: this is the rough draft of the story, not the final draft. The message is the same...the final draft was just a little more descriptive, that's all.)THE ROCK CONCERT One day, millions of years ago, God decided to hold a rock concert. He created a band called God’s Rock Angels with immense musical talent, and told them to come up with songs to play at the concert. Every man, animal, and plant attended. In that rock concert, they then juked and jived to the sounds of God’s Rock Angels. God’s Rock Angels started a new song, and decided to turn the volume to its maximum potential. They asked God for bigger speakers, and God complied. They asked God for a hundred strobe lights and a hundred spotlights, and God complied. With this increase in volume and blinding white light, the Rock Angels embarked on their hit single, “A Halo for You”. Unfortunately for the men, it was too loud for their fragile ears. They all started running for the exit, but some did not make it in time, and their ears shattered, and became deaf. Unfortunately for the men, the lights were too bright for their shy eyes. They all started running for the exit, but some did not make it in time, and their eyes shut down, and became blind. And to this day, God atones for his mistake by continuing the hierarchy of deaf and blind people; so that everyone will never forget the day when the music was too loud and the lights were too bright.
